What the October 2011 Movement is:
Inspired by the peaceful uprisings this past year in the Middle East, Europe, and in cities across the United States (and especially in Wisconsin!), progressive organizers from around the country are launching a movement that aims to use the time tested tactics of non-violence and civil disobedience to make the following wildly popular policies a reality in this country:
- Taxing the rich and corporations
- Ending the wars, bringing the troops home, cut military spending
- Protecting the social safety net, strengthening Social Security and improving Medicare for all
- Ending corporate welfare for oil companies and other big business interests
- Transitioning to a clean energy economy, reversing environmental degradation
- Protecting worker rights including collective bargaining, create jobs and raise wages
- Getting money out of politics
Sound familiar? Maybe that's because these are exactly the same goals so many of us in Wisconsin, including the Wave, have been fighting for since January. The purpose of the October 2011 Movement is to take these demands national, to bring what we did in Madison to D.C.!
The movement will kick-off on October 6th, 2011 (the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan) with a march on and occupation of Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. The occupation will last as long as possible, with the hope that as the occupation grows it will self perpetuate similar to how the occupations in Cairo, Madrid, and Madison did this past year.
How can I get involved?
The organizers of the October 2011 movement have asked the Wisconsin contingent to lead the march into Freedom Plaza on October 6th. To get folks there the Wave is coordinating a caravan that will depart from Wisconsin on October 5th.
=> If you are able to join us, even for only a few days, please sign up for more information here!
(note, we may be able to arrange rides for folks who can't depart until the 6th, or 7th. Follow the link for more info)
=> Can't come but want to support the movement? Consider making a donation here to help us bring down the costs associated with this historic trip!
